Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission

Press release
KABUL, 7 December 2011
The AIHRC condemns the killing of over 50 civilians in the strongest terms possible, and considers it as a gross violation of human rights. Killing of civilians in three separate deadly attacks in the cities of Kabul, Mazar-e Sharif and Kandahar taking place on the tenth day of Moharram while the Muslim people of Afghanistan are mourning and celebrating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him. According to the AIHRC, targeting of civilians is contrary to the principles and values of Islam, the Constitution and International human rights instruments.
The right to life is a divine right, a God-given gift and no person shall be deprived of this right without legal reasons and due process of law. Islam prohibits killing of innocent people and the country's Constitution and International instruments on human rights have also prohibited the killing of civilians and those who do not participate directly in the war.
Targeting civilians in Ashura indicates that the attackers have no respect to any kind of Islamic principles and Mohammadi Shariah and has no other goal than killing of innocent people.
The AIHRC while expressing its sympathy and condolences to the families of victims of these attacks calls on the Afghan government to identify the perpetrators of these attacks and prosecute them judicially. Likewise, the Commission wants the Afghan security forces to make all efforts to ensure security to the people in the country.
